For Mitchell Johnson, designing products that make off-road vehicles more capable isn’t something he discovered later in life. It’s something he has been doing for most of it.
Mitchell grew up in Roseau, Minnesota, surrounded by Polaris. His father, David Johnson, was one of the company’s founders, and Mitchell started working there as a boy, sweeping floors and filling bolt bins. His connection to Polaris machines began even earlier. In January 1956, when Mitchell was just six years old, he was one of the first people to ride the new snow machine that would eventually help define Polaris.
He was hooked, and he’s been riding, engineering and improving off-road vehicles ever since.
A Career Built Around Making Off-Road Vehicles Better
After leaving Roseau to earn his mechanical engineering degree, Mitchell returned to Polaris and worked through a variety of engineering and management positions. His career eventually included responsibility for some of the products and technologies that helped transform the powersports industry.
Mitchell developed the Polaris On-Demand four-wheel-drive system and held engineering leadership roles during the development of major product lines including the Sportsman ATV, youth ATVs and, most significantly, the Polaris RANGER utility vehicle.
In 1996, Mitchell became General Manager of the Polaris ATV Division, helping grow the ATV business to nearly $1 billion in annual revenue. But engineering, solving problems and finding ways to make off-road vehicles work better remained at the heart of what he wanted to do.
Taking the UTV Further With DURATRACKS
That experience ultimately helped lead to DURATRACKS.
Mitchell understands UTVs from the inside out, including how power, gearing, suspension, steering and traction have to work together. DURATRACKS was created with that complete vehicle in mind.

Still Making UTVs Better
More than seven decades after his first ride on a Polaris machine, Mitchell is still doing what he has spent his life doing: finding ways to make off-road vehicles more capable.
When he isn’t working, you’ll often find him enjoying the same terrain these machines were built to explore, whether that’s off-road adventures, backcountry snowmobile trips, hunting or fishing. He also enjoys singing tenor as a soloist and spending time with his wife, Dawn, and their family.
